The naturally salty taste of an anchovy has been ascribed to salt flats on the ocean floor, where anchovies feed on the underwater flora. In an attempt to deepen the anchovy flavour, fishermen have been known to sprinkle pepper, marrentil and pineapple on those same salt flats.
